A Centre of Excellence for Special Educational Needs

About Epinay School

Epinay School provides education for students aged 4–18 with a wide range of special educational needs. Their focus is on fostering a safe, inclusive centre of excellence, preparing students for adulthood. Seeking to enhance student engagement and emotional regulation, Epinay partnered with Aurora by Osborne Technologies to create a visionary immersive classroom.

Inspiring Engagement and Emotional Regulation

The Opportunity

Epinay’s Head Teacher, Chris Rue, was inspired by immersive learning spaces during visits to other SEN schools. Recognising the potential benefits for his students, he sought a solution that would not only support emotional regulation but also enrich the curriculum.

The hope is that the immersive room, along with our rebound room and sensory provision, supports students with their ASD in terms of regulating their own behaviour. So, when they leave this room and go back to more academic-type lessons, they’re in a better positionto learn.

The Space Before

A Fully Immersive Space for Learning and Wellbeing

The Solution

After contacting Aurora by Osborne Technologies, Chris learned about the enhanced possibilities offered by immersive technology. By integrating Wizefloor, an interactive floor projection system, along with environmental effects like scent, wind, and vibration, he could create immersive experiences that would engage and stimulate students in a variety of situations.

The Aurora team transformed an existing classroom into a fully immersive space. The installation included three projection walls, Wizefloor, high-fidelity audio system, scent delivery, wind machines, vibration seating, and LED lighting, creating a dynamic and flexible learning environment. All elements are seamlessly controlled via the Aurora Console, an exclusive tablet-based app, ensuring ease of use for staff. Aurora also provided full training and a smooth handover, ensuring confidence in using and maximising the new environment.

The Results

How teachers are using the immersive classroom to enhance learning

Accessible and engaging learning

Students with additional learning needs can find complex concepts difficult to grasp. The immersive room turns abstract ideas into tangible experiences, helping pupils engage with subjects in a real and interactive way. This approach makes lessons more memorable and impactful.

Calming and de-escalation

For students who experience sensory overload or emotional dysregulation, the immersive classroom offers a controlled and soothing environment. Customisable projection, lighting, scent, and music create a tranquil space where students can self-regulate, reducing stress and improving overall well-being.

Bringing curriculum to life

The immersive space enriches lessons by placing students at the centre of learning. Geography can transport them to a rainforest or volcano, while History and Art come alive through virtual museum and site tours. This dynamic approach deepens understanding and inspires exploration.

Preparing students for real-world situtations

From navigating a bus journey to attending a medical appointment, everyday experiences can be overwhelming for some students. The immersive classroom allows them to practice these scenarios in a safe and controlled setting, building confidence and reducing anxiety before encountering them in real life.

Encouraging creativity and storytelling

The immersive classroom enables pupils to step inside their own stories, stimulating imagination and creativity. Teachers can transform the space into a setting for creative writing, drama, or group storytelling, helping students to express themselves, build confidence, and develop communication skills in an engaging and supportive environment.

Supporting personalised learning

Teachers can tailor immersive sessions to meet individual needs, adjusting visuals, sounds, and interactivity to match each student’s learning style or ability level. This flexibility supports differentiated instruction and ensures that every learner can experience success, making lessons more inclusive and meaningful.

It’s been fabulous working with Aurora, you’ve delivered everything that we asked for. You’ve thought about what will actually work for us and you’ve provided the ideal room for our children.

- Chris Rue, Headteacher

This room will be timetabled every lesson, by different age groups, different subjects, and specialisms, so that it will enrich the curriculum right across the school for all our ages.
