Teddington School
Osborne Technologies' Aurora immersive room for education
A Commitment to Innovation and Inclusion
About Teddington School
Teddington School is a mainstream secondary school and part of the Bourne Education Trust. With 86 teaching staff and a total workforce of 120, the school is committed to delivering high-quality education in an inclusive and supportive environment. Headteacher Paul Grills leads the school in its ambition to provide innovative opportunities that inspire students, raise aspirations, and prepare them for future success.
More Engaging and Accessible Learning
The Opportunity
The school sought to introduce an immersive learning space to offer a more inclusive alternative to traditional classrooms and to support a range of learning styles. Inspired initially by seeing an immersive room at another school, Paul and his team recognised the potential for immersive technology to transform engagement, accessibility, and practical learning opportunities.
Teddington identified a unique opportunity to create an innovative environment that would benefit students across abilities, including those with learning difficulties. The immersive space was also viewed as a way to bring subjects to life, embed real-world learning scenarios, and provide a distinctive educational feature that would attract interest from both the school community and beyond.
The Space Before
Collaboration, Communication and Installation
The Process
Working closely with Aurora by Osborne Technologies, the school ensured the project met its goals of accessibility, functionality, and broad usage across the curriculum. The Aurora team provided clear guidance and support throughout procurement, installation, and training. Headteacher Paul Grills highlighted the value of Craig and the Aurora team’s communication and expertise in making the process smooth and efficient.
From the initial consultation to the final installation, the project ran to schedule, and on-site training was provided to ensure staff felt confident in using the system. The low training requirement combined with the ease of use made the immersive room an attractive and sustainable investment for a busy secondary school.
The Concept
Three-Wall Projection
The 270-degree projection system uses three walls to create a panoramic visual experience, surrounding users with dynamic, high-definition imagery. Ideal for interactive storytelling, simulations, or environmental immersion, it transforms any room into a multi-dimensional sensory space that captivates and engages participants.
Six Projectors
Large format stitched projection enables users to be fully immersed into real world and virtual environments. Using Ultra HD projection hardware across multiple surfaces, including walls and floors, we create an experiential learning space, which engages and inspires learners of all abilities.
Audio System
An audio system offering high-fidelity soundscapes that amplify the immersive experience. Designed to deliver crystal-clear audio, it enhances engagement through ambient sounds, music, and directional audio cues, creating a fully enveloping atmosphere.
Control Unit
The control unit hardware is a compact, discreet hub at the heart of the immersive system, managing communication between all connected devices. Built for reliability and performance, it ensures seamless operation of projection, lighting, and audio elements, keeping every aspect of the sensory experience perfectly synchronised.
Aurora Console
The Aurora console is designed for simplicity and ease of use within sensory and immersive spaces. This tablet-based app provides effortless control over every element in the room. Its intuitive interface eliminates the need for technical expertise, allowing anyone to easily adjust lighting, audio, and environmental settings.
Computer Screen
A high-resolution computer screen provides a clear interface for managing and monitoring room activity. Ideal for configuration, playback, and content control, it offers precise visual feedback and real-time performance information.
Dynamic Lighting
A dynamic lighting solution that transforms the user experience by extending video content beyond the screen and into the room. The unique video-to-light software, combined with large-format projection, seamlessly transforms the space, immersing users into the environment.
A Flexible Immersive Learning Environment
The Solution
The immersive room installation has provided Teddington with a dynamic and flexible learning environment. Its intuitive design allows staff to deliver lessons that make complex subjects easier to understand while engaging students through interactive and visually stimulating content. The technology also enables practical, real-world simulations that help prepare students for life beyond the classroom.
During the launch week, the school introduced ‘immersive lunches’, where students had the opportunity to experience the space outside of normal lessons. These sessions generated excitement and sparked curiosity among pupils, many of whom commented on how unique the facility was compared to other schools. The room has also attracted significant interest from local primary schools, creating opportunities for community engagement and shared learning experiences.
The Results
Inspiring Engagement, Collaboration and Community Interest
The immersive room has already had a noticeable impact on student learning and engagement, including:
Enhanced motivation and enthusiasm across a wide range of subjects.
Improved understanding and retention of complex topics.
Supported diverse learning styles and the needs of students with learning difficulties.
Enabled simulation of real-world environments for practical, applied learning.
Strengthened community connections by attracting visits and partnerships with local primary schools.
Stronger collaboration between teaching staff through shared use of immersive lesson plans.
- Paul Grills, HeadteacherThe experience of working with Aurora has been a positive one. From the initial meeting to install and then on-site training, communication was clear, deadlines were met, and we are extremely impressed with the final product. The impact on our students has been significant although in the early stages. Students are excited to be learning new topics in the space and enjoyed using it as part of our ‘immersive lunches’ launch week.
- Paul Grills, HeadteacherMany of our students commented how great it was and how not many other schools have this facility. Interest from the community has also been strong and we plan to involve local primary schools who have expressed an interest in using the space. Overall, we are delighted with our immersive room.
